Neighborhood Guide · Queens
Astoria
Stoops, corner cafés, and a neighborhood with a long memory.
Row houses & corner cafés
Astoria balances a busy commercial spine with quiet residential blocks behind it. It is a neighborhood where people stay — and where the daily routine of the bakery, the park, and the walk to the train is part of why.
Architecture & housing styles
Expect brick and limestone row houses with stoops and small front gardens, walk-up apartment buildings, and detached homes on the quieter streets. Some blocks hold early-twentieth-century commercial buildings with original storefront details.
Lifestyle, culture & local life
Astoria Park and its pool sit along the East River, the Museum of the Moving Image anchors the cultural side, and the café and restaurant scene along Ditmars Boulevard and Broadway is one of the neighborhood's great pleasures.
Transportation & accessibility
Several subway lines connect Astoria to Midtown and the rest of Queens, with bus routes filling in the blocks between.
Residential real estate considerations
The range of housing here is unusually broad — co-ops, condos, two-family houses, and detached homes — so the right questions differ by property type. Board requirements, rental rules, and Certificate of Occupancy details are worth reviewing early.
